What Are Rashtriya Military Schools?

Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) are English-medium residential public schools run by the Ministry of Defence for preparing cadets academically and for future defence service and leadership roles. Admissions are offered into Class VI and Class IX based on a common entrance test.

There are five RMS located at:

  • Chail (Himachal Pradesh)
  • Ajmer (Rajasthan)
  • Dholpur (Rajasthan)
  • Belgaum (Karnataka)
  • Bengaluru (Karnataka)

Key Admission & Exam Dates (Typical)

  • Exam Month: December every year (for next academic year intake) – e.g., RMS CET was held on 7 December 2025 for 2026–27 session.
  • Application Window: Usually from September to October (varies yearly).
  • Admit Card: Released online ~1 week before the exam.
  • Result & Interview: Results followed by interview and medical test in early next year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • An age relaxation of 6 months is given for children of martyrs.
  • Both boys and girls are eligible.

Educational Qualification

  • Class VI: Must be studying in or have passed Class V.
  • Class IX: Must be studying in or have passed Class VIII.

RMS Common Entrance Test (CET) – Pattern & Syllabus

The entrance test is OMR-based multiple-choice and conducted in English and Hindi (Class 6 usually bilingual; Class 9 often bilingual too).

  • Total Marks: ~200
  • Std Level: Class V level

Selection Process

  4. Final Merit List & School Allocation – Based on combined score, reservation norms, and vacancies.

Reservations & Seat Info (General Trends)

  • Reservation quotas apply for defence wards (serving & ex-servicemen) and civilians.
  • Typically: 70% seats for JCOs/OR children
  • 30% for Officers/Civilians
  • Further category reservations (OBC, SC, ST)

Application & Admit Card

  • Apply online via the official RMS CET portal when the window is open.
  • Admit card must be downloaded before the exam.
  • Carry admit card and required documents to the exam center.
